Crafting Meeting Room Policies

Crafting Meeting Room Policies that Keep You In Charge and Out of Court
November 4, 2015 @ 2 pm EST

Legal advocacy groups are threatening legal action and filing lawsuits against public libraries whose meeting room policies exclude religious worship or meetings that include religious activities.

In the last year, these organizations have contacted multiple different libraries about lawsuits regarding meeting room policies; including Lawrence Library in Massachusetts (settlement) and Wake County in North Carolina.

Theresa Chmara, general counsel for the Freedom to Read Foundation, and Deborah Caldwell Stone, deputy director for ALA’s Office for Intellectual Freedom, will discuss the First Amendment principles and legal precedents that underlie these lawsuits and provide practical guidance on crafting meeting room and other library policies that keep the library in charge of its meeting rooms while preserving users’ access and First Amendment rights.

Don’t wait until your library receives a lawsuit.  Learn how to strengthen your policies now.

Ebooks in Libraries: Amigos.org Webinar

Title: Ebooks in Libraries: An Update

When: Monday, November 16, 2015

Where: Online

Amigos Members: Admission is free!

Non-Members: Register by November 2nd for Early Bird Pricing

Libraries have been working with ebooks for a number of years now and in a variety of ways. The landscape, however, has continued to shift – sometimes under our feet. It is time to take a day to assess where we are.

Some libraries work within the limitations of existing services, providing exceptional value for their communities. Others create their own services from scratch, while still others take advantage of both scenarios. What are you doing to enhance your ebook services? Have you studied your statistics, run user or usability studies, tried an assortment of marketing techniques? Have you created partnerships or worked with specific groups? Gone “where no library has gone before?” Your experiences could help other libraries.

Sessions include topics to tempt public, academic, and special libraries:

  • Two sessions on Demand-Driven Acquisition – one a 4-year evaluation of use at their library and the other assessing the short-term DDA model.
  • How a library worked with a vendor to present sessions to other libraries, but had the unintended consequence of nudging the vendor to make changes to their interface.
  • Thoughts from a public librarian on subscription-based ebook platforms like Freading/Freegal, Hoopla, and Total Boox.
  • How two library with space limitations have used ebooks as a way to keep pace with the needs of their communities.
  • Description and evaluation of a public library that provides one-on-one ebook assistance for their patrons.
  • New way to enliven the classics through the 50 x 50 campaign.
  • Overview and demonstration of Amigos’ new ebook project, the Amigos eShelf Service, which will be available to all libraries in November.

Online conference sessions will run 45 minutes each throughout the day. Recordings will be available to attendees after the conference.

Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Prevention and Treatment in Public Libraries

  PLA Webinar:
Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Prevention and Treatment in Public Libraries

October 28; 1:00 PM Central

So, your library has discovered bed bugs in your facility or collections. Or maybe your library is lucky and hasn’t yet had a bed bug introduction, but you’d like to be prepared if and when that introduction happens, so you’re not trying to have months worth of policy discussions in a few hours or days.

This webinar will provide everything you need to know, from identifying bed bugs, to ways they are introduced into the library, to treatment and mitigation options that will help you protect your library’s facilities and collections on a daily basis. Libraries around the country and world have successfully dealt with bed bugs—you can too! Instructor Sarah Kitrell is the author of the forthcoming PLA publication, Bed Bug Abatement in Public Libraries.

At the conclusion of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

  • Know how to identify bed bugs and the signs that materials have been in a home with bed bugs;
  • Recognize the problem areas in facilities and collections that staff should pay close attention to every day, in order to prevent bed bug introductions from becoming infestations; and
  • Understand treatment and mitigation options to protect facilities and collections.

This webinar is intended for all library staff, but particularly those in administration, as well as those working with collections, facilities, and circulation.
