News from the New York Council for the Humanities

The New York Council for the Humanities has updated its grant guidelines and application forms for both Mini Grants ($2500 and below) and Major Grants (over $2500). These new materials should be used for all future applications to the Council and are available on our website at www.nyhumanities.org/grants

Grant Deadlines and Eligibility: Our next Major Grant deadline is November 1st, 2007; Mini Grants are accepted on a rolling basis. Council grants are available to any New York State non-profit organization to support public programs in the humanities, and can be used for a wide range of projects.

POLARIS Enhancement Voting Begins

VOTING STARTS
No special weight is assigned based on the order in which the votes are cast, i.e. a vote in the #1 position on a ballot has no more weight than the #4 position in the same category.

VOTING ENDS
Please return your ballot by courier (MVLS), fax (355-0674) or email (mvls@mvls.info) to Kathy Insero at MVLS by Monday September 10, 2007.

THEN WHAT
Votes are tabulated and the enhancement lists are sent to Polaris for response by the annual meeting. (October 4-7, 2007). Voting results will be posted on the Polaris Extranet at 2007 Ballot Summary.

Teen Services Opportunity: Teen 3 Apples Book Award

The 3 Apples Book Award Committee announced the 15 finalists for the first annual Teen 3 Apples Book Award, a New York State Teen’s Choice Award. This award is jointly sponsored by the Youth Services Section and the School Library Media Section of the New York Library Association.

Libraries can work with their teen advisory groups and reach out to teen users in grades 7-12 (ages 13 and up), even those that did not participate in the nomination process, to encourage participation in selecting the award.  Teens are asked to read or listen to at least 3 of these nominated titles before the voting begins on January 1, 2008.

Teens across New York State have nominated the following titles:
