Guerrilla Story time:

We ran out of time to answer everyone’s problems, so I am saving them for our Fall workshop.  Here is what we did come up with though:
Problem: Parents bring siblings to story time and they are disruptiveSolutions:

  • Make an announcement before starting that parents may leave and come back as often as they need to deal with a disruptive child
  • Encourage parents to use an activity corner in another area of the building

Problem: How do you get higher attendance?Solutions:

  • publicize on social media, newspaper, Penny Saver
  • coordinate with local day cares and Head Start
  • keep working on finding the right time
  • accommodate groups such as day cares
  • add songs and music to engage children not likely to sit quietly the entire time

Problem: What to do when the parent(s) are talking?
Solutions:

  • Read louder
  • engage parents by asking them questions or having them help act out a story
  • “We need everyone to listen…even the big people.”
  • Stop reading until it is quiet

Problem: When asking questions one child shouts out the answersSolution: direct questions to a child directly (use their name and ask)

3 Science Discovery: Unraveling the science behind “Fizz, Boom, Read.”

Teaching children and families to explore and enjoy science in the world around them is a fun and exciting skill for any educator to possess.  In this hands-on science workshop, librarians will be trained on a series of science experiments that can be incorporated into various library events from science story times to discovery zones and more.  CNSE CMOST staff will encourage librarians to experiment, broaden their knowledge and most importantly have fun while delving deeper into science! We will  also spend time discussing ways to alter programs for different learning environments and how to accommodate a various types of learners.
