Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Prevention and Treatment in Public Libraries

  PLA Webinar:
Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite: Prevention and Treatment in Public Libraries

October 28; 1:00 PM Central

So, your library has discovered bed bugs in your facility or collections. Or maybe your library is lucky and hasn’t yet had a bed bug introduction, but you’d like to be prepared if and when that introduction happens, so you’re not trying to have months worth of policy discussions in a few hours or days.

This webinar will provide everything you need to know, from identifying bed bugs, to ways they are introduced into the library, to treatment and mitigation options that will help you protect your library’s facilities and collections on a daily basis. Libraries around the country and world have successfully dealt with bed bugs—you can too! Instructor Sarah Kitrell is the author of the forthcoming PLA publication, Bed Bug Abatement in Public Libraries.

At the conclusion of this one-hour webinar, participants will:

  • Know how to identify bed bugs and the signs that materials have been in a home with bed bugs;
  • Recognize the problem areas in facilities and collections that staff should pay close attention to every day, in order to prevent bed bug introductions from becoming infestations; and
  • Understand treatment and mitigation options to protect facilities and collections.

This webinar is intended for all library staff, but particularly those in administration, as well as those working with collections, facilities, and circulation.

Using Door-to-Door Marketing for Library Card Sign-Ups: Free Webinar

“How did your library card sign-ups go this year? Join us at 12 p.m. eastern time on Wednesday, Oct. 21, for a free webinar to learn about a new and innovative way to increase library card sign-ups all year long, not just during Library Card Sign-up Month in September.

This webinar will offer marketing strategies for getting outside of your library to break down the barriers that keep people from opting in to a library card. Learn how to dramatically improve your library’s visibility in the community by taking a page from the best political campaigns and going door-to-door to sign people up. The webinar will also provide effective ways to bring this new idea of building awareness to your board and administrators. You will hear directly from librarians who’ve used these strategies successfully in their communities. Their door-to-door engagement tactics can be part of your library’s ongoing advocacy efforts.

Register now!

There is no cost to attend the webinar, but registration is required. Participation is limited to the first 100 participants who arrive in the virtual room prior to the start of the webinar, but the webinar will be archived and accessible to ALA members.

SALS Joins Zepheira Experimenter Program

Press Release (PDF)

Southern Adirondack Library System Joins Zepheira Experimenter Program

Saratoga Springs, NY, October 13, 2015– The Southern Adirondack Library System (SALS) is excited to announce it will participate in an Experimenter Program with Zepheira, a provider of software and services that help make information more easily accessible on the Web.  After an assessment of existing catalog records, Zepheira will design an approach to publish those records directly to the web using the power of Linked Data.

“What’s so great about Linked Data?” you ask?

Linked Data is an incredible tool for transforming the accessibility of information.

Think—the locations of library books & movies at your fingertips from the same search engine or app you just used to check movie times, your email & the weather!

Think—the thing you want, the location you’re looking for, the answer you need… all brought to the surface immediately!  No longer will your information be buried or bogged down under layers of sites and resources that aren’t properly connected to each other!

The Internet is an intricate structure of layer upon layer of data spun into patterns that we have to learn to navigate before we can find what we want.  With this Experimenter Program, we want to unspin the web & weave a stronger one—one that places information & resources at our patrons’ fingertips instantly and simply.

Think—Linked Data… because it’s the future!

The Mohawk Valley Library System (MVLS) is also participating in the Experimenter Program; this endeavor is supported by funds allocated by Senator Farley to both library systems.  SALS and MVLS receive technical support from the Joint Automation Project team, who will play a crucial role in this innovative restructuring of the consortium’s catalog records.

“We are delighted to partner with these forward thinking libraries that see the benefits of exposing library catalog data to the Web,” explains John Richardson, Zepheira Vice-President for Library & Vendor Partnerships. “They help us shape the experience for libraries and current patrons, as well as open new possibilities for the regular Web and search engine user.”

The other two participants include the Westchester Library System, located in Tarrytown, NY, and Cedar Rapids Public Library in Iowa.  The program will run through June 30, 2016.
