The United States Postal Service (USPS) is inviting some public libraries to double as local post offices in areas where post offices are closing or reducing hours. The Village Post Office (VPO) program offers basic services including mail collection and sale of stamps and flat rate packaging boxes. Libraries interested in the program can contact vpo.inquiry@usps.gov or (888) 711-7577. For more information check out Meredith Schwartz’s Library Journal article, “Libraries Could Double As Post Offices“.
At this point in time, we no longer have delivery service among the academic libraries (Adirondack Community College, Skidmore, SUNY Albany, Siena, etc), the NY State Library and local BOCES.
There will be no disruption in service between the SALS member libraries and the MVLS member libraries (POLARIS). In addition, we are working with UHLS to keep library materials moving among all the public libraries in the 10 county capital district region.
In the interim, we want to get the academic and school library materials back to the owning libraries as quickly as possible. SALS will be happy to return these academic and school library items for you – please send them to SALS using the current delivery codes. Please suspend requesting and filling academic and school library requests unless you or your patron are willing to pay the US postage, beginning today, July 2, 2012.
We will keep you up to date on any changes to service in the days to come.
