September is Library Card Sign-Up Month

Launched in September 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when public and school libraries across the country join together to remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.

2010 Joseph F. Shubert Excellence Award

The Regents Advisory Council on Libraries has announced that the applications are now available for the 2010 Joseph F. Shubert Library Excellence Award.  The Award recognizes the achievements of small, medium and large libraries, as well as  library consortia of New York State by recognizing achievements that improve the quality of library service to their users.  This year’s award includes a gift of $1,000 donated by The Friends of the New York State Library.  The deadline for application submission is July 30, 2010.

Promise Neighborhoods Grant

The Department of Education has $10 million for planning grants for the Promise Neighborhoods program as part of the Fund for the Improvement of Education.

These planning grants for $400,000 to $500,000 each are for the planning purpose of what will be a program to improve significantly the education and development outcomes of children in distressed communities.

This is a heads up for school, community college and public librarians to REACH OUT NOW to eligible entities which could be non-profit organizations or institutions of higher learning who might be applying because they operate a school; partner with a school or Local Education Agency; currently provide a solution to cradle-through-college-to-career in a distressed neighborhood or represent a neighborhood being proposed for service.
