Abby Preschel Kalan wrote a concise article on Collection Development and weeding that I hope you take the time to read. Click –>here for the article.
It has been a pleasure to meet with all of the new directors at SALS and discuss collection development. Weeding with new eyes is always easier. Abby has some quick tips that we can probably all agree on – so go head to your stacks and see if you have any of the following items, still on your shelf:
Law
Medical advice
Real estate, wills, estate planning, retirement, etc. (check your NOLO guides)
Travel-what edition do you have? Are the restaurants still open?
Study guides: GED – no longer exists, SATs – changes, Regents – do they have that test anymore?
Price guides – obsolete as soon as they are printed, so the older your copy is…
Atlases and maps – countries come and go, names change and new roads are put on the map each year. If your atlas is for historical purposes keep it; if it is written in present tense and the places are obsolete, buy a new copy.
