Music Call Number Proposal: Modified ANSCR

For more than 6 years SALS has used the Alpha-Numeric System for Classification of Recordings (ANSCR) for assigning call numbers.  This system allows for a unique call number for every piece of music in your collection.  At the November 20, 2006 Technical Services meeting, a change was presented that will work better with new bibliographic call number procedure that began on November 15, 2006.

What is ANSCR?

ANSCR uses 4 terms to describe music.

Term one: ANSCR category to group related recordings

Term two: 4 consecutive letters of a name or word to arrange recordings within a category

Term three: First letters of first three key words or a title or of one word of a title to identify the work or album title

Term four: First letter of performer’s surname followed by commercial record number to make the class number unique.

These terms are represented in the bibliographic record as follows:
CD MR BECK SC B 99

Call number prefix: CD or RC
Term one: MR – rock music
Term two: BECK – musicians name
Term three: SC – title of album (Sea Change)
Term four: B 99 – musicians surname plus commercial record number

These terms are represented in the item record as follows:

Call number prefix: CD (RC) and Term one
Call number cutter: Term two
Call number suffix: Terms three and four
