2008 Summer Reading Program Statistics
In 2008, the New York State Annual Report is collecting data about Summer Reading (Questions 3.11 through 3.29). Libraries answered some of these questions by answering the survey for the Summer Reading report submitted to SALS in September of 2008. For your convenience, we have reproduced that data below.
CPSIA Fact Sheet
While libraries have no independent obligation to test library books for lead under law, some libraries may have older books in their circulating children’s collections that cause public concern.
Public and association libraries in New York State have the option to remove older books from children’s collections in accordance with board-approved collection development policies.
However, the State Library recommends that older children’s books of possible historical significance or research value be either moved to a non-circulating collection in the library or donated to a historic children’s book repository.
Every Child Ready to Read @ Your Library
The Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children, have incorporated the latest research into a series of parent and caregiver workshops to provide public libraries with vital tools to help prepare parents for their critical role as their child’s first teacher. These tools were developed by Dr. Grover C. Whitehurst and Dr. Christopher Lonigan, well-known researchers in emergent literacy, and have been tested and refined by library demonstrations sites around the country.
