Participants of the September 2009 CPLA workshop, “Planning & Management of Buildings” presented by Cheryl Bryan, learned how to assess their current buildings and how to develop and implement building improvement projects. As a result of this workshop and the current LSTA grant, library managers were asked to have three building assessment surveys filled out by a library staff member, a trustee, and a patron. They were then asked to tell SALS how they implemented a change to their buildings based on the survey feedback.

We all know that the libraries in the Southern Adirondack Library System are both culturally and technologically critical in our rural communities. We provide internet access, computer literacy training, and provide information in all formats. The Secretary of Agriculture has designated$100 million in USDA Rural Development CommunityFacilities funding for public libraries. The program will provide educational opportunities and improve public services in rural communities.

From the press release: The $100 million will primarily be provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Recovery Act funds will help give rural communities the opportunity to improve their library facilities, enhance educational opportunities and improve economic conditions in America’s rural communities. Library construction or renovation projects also will create and save jobs for residents in the construction and library service fields.

What’s life like on a typical day at your library? Wouldn’t you like to document in statistics, pictures, videos and user comments just how busy and essential your library is?

Then join New York’s libraries and participate in “Snapshot: A Day in the Life of a Library” by collecting statistics, comments, and photographs/videos from one day between now and Feb. 17th to provide tangible proof that libraries consistently provide invaluable services to our communities, in our schools and on our college campuses.

Pick a day and send NYLA your statistics for that one day in any or all of these areas:

1. Patron/Student Visits/Door Count

2. Internet/Public Computer Usage

3. Number of Reference Questions

4. Number of Educational Programs Offered (computer, early childhood/adult literacy, etc.)

5. Circulation Total for the Day

In the near future, NYLA will provide you with a link to a survey form and website to provide statistics that you have gathered and any comments, photos or videos you would like to share from that day.

For assistance in organizing your “ SnapShotNY: A Day in the Life of a Library” , please contact Johanna Geiger at events@nyla.org.

Submit your statistics and testimonials by Feb. 17th so NYLA can compile everything and showcase the information at Library Lobby Day, Tuesday, March 2nd in Albany.

The libraries submitting the top three videos/photos/comments will receive a Flip Video Camera and one free registration to the NYLA Annual Conference in Saratoga Springs – Nov. 3-6th.
