Change to Overdrive e-Audiobooks Service

August 10th, 2009 · 8 Comments

Starting on the week of August 3rd the default loan period for borrowing e-audiobooks has changed from 14 days to 7 days.

Listeners have the option to change the loan period to 14 days if you need more time to enjoy your selection.

I vote for returning to the longer loan for e-audiobooks. I listen to these when walking/exercising and the play length of these books means I can’t listen/finish the book in just a week. Even 14 days might not be long enough.

14 day loans are still available when checking out your e-audiobooks. You can even set 14 days as a default so that you don’t have to manually change the loan during each checkout.

After logging into the website go to “My Account” and then click on “Lending Periods” to set a personalized default of 14 days.

Who cares ? Nothing is ever available.
I am extremely disappointed with Salon-Overdrive e-audiobooks. The selection is miniscule. Availability is next to zero. For example, I just perused the “Mystery and Thriller collection, a total of one book is available. And listening to the download, is most cumbersome. Since the download is in sections, you have to manually reset your player everytime you come to a new section.
Please do not renew this contract.

My experience with MP3 books is excellent. While the selection leaves something to be desired, I’m aware of the budget challenges all libraries have. I’m simply delighted that MP3 files are now available (iPods can play only this type of book from the library).
As far as availability, so you have to wait until the previous borrow returns the audio book – so what. It might be a while, but there are other things to do with ones life in the meantime.

I listen to audio books all the time. I am retired. I listen to them when I walk, when I mow the lawn, and when I clean. I have had to resort to going back to little Waterford library to take out books on CD because I have heard just about everything that I’d like to hear on OverDrive. Our little library has a bigger selection than this website has!! I don’t understand. If this service was just paid for by the Waterford’s limited budget, I would certianly understand. BUT, this site serves dozens of libraries in many, many towns…..in FOUR COUNTIES!!! Why aren’t there more seletions available?
    not angry, just curious…..

Currently this service is being paid for by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors, the Crandall Public Library and the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Just like Waterford, all of the libraries in the 4 counties have limited budgets and will contribute to the joint collection if they can. We do purchase new titles on a monthly basis and post the list on this website.

I just downloaded Overdrive only to discover that all the good books are in WMA format and I can’t find anything I want in MP3. I’m disappointed!!

    Kelly,

We have shared you observation with the ordering committee. Efforts will be made to order more MAC compatable titles. Thank you for your comment.
