Crandall Public Library, SALS’ Central Library
How to Interlibrary Loan
As easy as 1, 2, 3
1. Begin by searching for the item in the SALS/MVLS catalog. If you find it, place a request. The item will arrive via the delivery service
2. If you can’t find the item, and it is likely to be held by a public library, you should then check the Upper Hudson Library catalog: http://www.uhls.org/uhls/catalog.cfm. Fill out the CDLC Interlibrary loan form and send it, with a copy of the library’s availability to the lending library. The item will arrive via the delivery service.
3. Send your request directly to Crandall Public Library if the item isn’t in the SALS/MVLS or UHLS catalogs. As part of their Central Library services, Crandall staff will locate the item and place the request for you. Based on their extensive experience, staff will request materials from locations with good fill rates. Borrowing libraries are responsible for returning the items to the loaning libraries; please do not return to Crandall.
Procedure: e-mail your request to info@crandalllibrary.org or call the Reference Desk at 792-6508 ext. 3 or 800-469-3356 with the information.
Note: Every attempt is made to borrow the item without cost but at times, the owning locations charge a fee to loan. It helps speed up the request if you ask your patron if they are willing to pay a fee. Try to pin them down as to how much they are willing to pay.
If you prefer to research and place your own requests—
• Search the Capital District Library Council (CDLC) Regional Union Catalog (CaDiLaC) http://cadilac.cdlc.org/CaDiLaC/index.html. to see the holdings of academic, public, school and special libraries in the Capital region.
• Search the New York State Interlibrary Loan Network (NYSILL) via the New York State Library’s Excelsior catalog. www.nysl.nysed.gov/xcelsior.htm (also on your database page). All SALS libraries have accounts at the NYS Library; contact Andrea Herman at Crandall Public Library if you do not know your ID and password.
• You can search WorldCat for free at http://www.worldcat.org/ to get locations and availability of the item your patron is requesting. Crandall Public Library will submit OCLC requests for member libraries.
If you want to learn more about using the above ILL options, contact Andrea Herman at Crandall Public Library herman@crandalllibrary.org
